Imagine the PS1 version with a smaller palette, maybe longer loading times and a smaller resolution and that would pretty much be what GTA on the Mega CD would be like. The Sega CD would be a more closer port due to the redbook audio for the radio, FMV cutscenes and scaling. Palette wise, since from what I can recall from GTA1 is a lot of yellow and grey with blue for the sea and green for the grass, the floor and buildings might be able to use one palette leaving room for the player and the other cars (that were multicolour if I remember like blue, pink, red) to choose from 3 palettes. Controls would have to be simplified (something that the GBC version did not do, you have to press 2 buttons to get in your car) but with the 6 button controller, the gameplay would be more closer and easier to play. Due to that the radio is a part of GTA and to even have a radio would rely on impressive work in terms of voice samples and music, it would have to be mostly different music (stuff like Head Radio, the Hip-hop, the country/western and the Rock stations would have to be cut due to heavy use of voices but the techno and the Dance stations would survive and the funk station just needs to do it instrumentally). As for traffic, maybe one or two less cars on the road than the PS1 version to reduce slowdown. Since the Genesis has a higher resolution than the GBC, it would display more of the screen but less than the PS1/PC versions that I believe are 640x480 so probably the HUD would be smaller and the phone text during the missions might have to be split up for readablility reasons. It would probably be in between the GBC version and the PS1 version in terms of capability. If it is the former, from the looks of things GTA1 doesn't really feel like a PS1 game with probably the redbook audio, more buttons, larger palette, FMV (I think GTA1 did have FMV for cutscenes) and the scaling being the only big things that the Genesis doesn't have (well the scaling could be done software scaling or lots of ROM space but the maps are quite big and there is the 6 button controller). Personally yes, it can be done on the Mega Drive but it really depends whether you want a port of GTA1 or a GTA styled game like Retro City Rampage. ![]()
